September – Reset and Refocus

Golden leaves are littering the pavement, there’s a noticeable chill to dawn as the darker mornings steal you from sleep and the roads are rammed once more. It’s September – joy! Summer is over and school is in session.

Many us will be feeling a little down and demotivated as we mourn the end of summer. That makes September the perfect the time to reset and refocus.

Why is September a good time to reset and refocus employees?

Summer holiday season is over as disruptions reduce and new routines are established. September is the perfect time to reengage employees to push for a successful year end, before heads are turned by trick or treating and tinsel.

Prioritise engagement and wellbeing now for a productive year end.

Strategies to boost engagement

  • Arrange 1 to 1s with your team – ask about their summer, talk about their goals for the end of year, consider whether they are happy in their role. This is an opportunity to support, motivate and encourage employees with short term goals you can use to co-create achievement in December.
  • Acknowledge previous achievements – celebrate any individual and team successes throughout the year to increase self-esteem, motivation and team cohesion.
  • Reestablish purpose – time to realign your teams, restate priorities for end of year to refocus employees and promote the company mission and values.
  • Encourage wellbeing – encourage employees to take responsibility for their own wellbeing e.g. suggest winter wellness walks to encourage teams to take advantage of natural daylight to boost vitamin D, encourage team connection and increase physical exercise. Also consider flu vouchers, healthy team snacks and lunches and free wellbeing resources.
  • Lead by example – leaders, managers and HR professionals need to role model behaviour they want to see in employees, from taking regular breaks and using up holidays to drinking water and healthy eating.

By prioritising engagement and modelling intentional reset behaviours, you create space for your teams to thrive. As leaders, your influence sets the tone. Consider: What does a meaningful reset look like for you and how can you inspire it in others?
